This was posted via MT api with mt_convert_breaks value of 0 - same as this post (which did not work) - except line feeds are normalized that is \r\n and \r becomes a \n. The following is <pre> (i.e preserve space):

     Para 1
     <br />
     Para 1 line 2
  </p>
  <p>
     Para 2 line 1
     <br />
     line 2
     <br />
     line 3
  </p>
